DOWNFALL

Society being sold off by those in power for meagre kickbacks. Technology being used against the people rather than to aid the people. Huge global conglomerates dumping millions of gallons of oil into the sea through their own incompetence, and filling the air with unbreathable toxins whilst felling huge swathes of forest and jungle - the one thing that would allow the planet to breathe and possibly recover. Companies poison water supplies and sell the solution in convenient plastic packaging, but it's not their fault that the planet is dying, it's because people aren't putting their empty bottles in the correct bin.

Consumerism becoming rampant because adverts are forced into people's sphere of being through every medium possible, and rather than sell something that will last and be useful for years to come, humanity is sold planned obsolescence - everything is designed to break or fail within a couple of years so that a replacement HAS to be bought, and more money HAS to be fed into multi billion dollar corporations, because heaven forbid those corporations could just make a little less profit. The shareholders won't have that though; there are politicians and media tycoons to bribe, so that lawmakers can be told which legal loopholes to leave open, and society can be told who to "other". If the public can be made to believe it's their friends, neighbours and peers that are what's wrong with the world, then the people in power can get away with whatever they want, as long as they have the funds.

And there comes a point where all of this is expected and accepted. People become used to it - numb even - it's just how things are. "Society working against you has become so normalised, you can barely summon the energy to be outraged by it"...

There's this sort of romanticised idea of a futuristic dystopia that has been sold to us over the years, with flying cars, huge megacities plastered with neon, cybernetic augmentations giving people (and maybe even their pets) superhuman abilities, and robots doing menial tasks for us. It's all very wonderful for what is supposedly humanity's final step before we either wipe ourselves out, or the universe does it for us. It serves to perhaps give us a glimmer of hope for the future, but I don't think we'll ever get there. I think this is it. This is our dystopia, our downfall.
